Modality. I'm interested in the language we use to talk about possibilities, about what's actually going on around us (e.g., must, might, have to, could, will, would), and how this relates to causal language (e.g., made, forced, let).
My research is interdisciplinary. I explore:
the formal tools we have to model modal meaning
the experimental tools we have to understand the processing of modality and
children's use of modal language that teaches us about the components of modality
Bridging cognitive science and formal semantics.
A principal goal of my research is to show just how particularly apt the investigation into modal language is for answering questions common to both cognitive science and formal semantics.
