What Modality Can Mean
An experimental-based theory of causatives as circumstantial modals
My dissertation investigates the relationship between modal and causal language using methodology from both formal semantics and psycholinguistics. The overarching goal is to present a case for the cognitive reality of modal language.
The project is co-supervised by Ana Arregui and Shota Momma.
I make 2 assumptions:
Truth conditions reflect the mechanisms of language processing
Causal expressions are modal
